Environmental Justice (EJNYC) Plan

Environmental Justice (EJ) is the principle that all people have a right to live, work, and play in communities that are safe, healthy, and free of harmful environmental conditions.

The Mayor's Office of Climate & Environmental Justice's (MOCEJ) EJNYC Report, published in April 2024, found that low-income communities and communities of color in New York City often face more environmental challenges—such as housing maintenance issues and pollution from heavy-duty diesel vehicles and power plants—while having less access to environmental amenities like tree canopy coverage and essential resources like healthy, affordable foods.

These unfair conditions are often the result of past discriminatory actions by public and private entities, and can contribute to serious health, social, and economic challenges.
To address these concerns, the City of New York is developing its first comprehensive Environmental Justice (EJNYC) Plan, and your feedback is critical to its success. The EJNYC Plan will outline recommendations for citywide initiatives and agency-specific actions that address EJ issues identified in the Report.
This questionnaire is voluntary and meant to gather information from New Yorkers about the EJ concerns in their communities, and the solutions they feel would be most impactful. Your decision to respond or not respond to the questionnaire shall not influence, alter, or otherwise affect any City benefits or services to which you are entitled to receive from the City of New York.

At the end of the questionnaire, you can choose to share your contact information to receive updates about future opportunities to inform and provide feedback on the draft EJNYC Plan, which will be released next year. Only MOCEJ and its consultant, WXY architecture + urban design, will have access to questionnaire responses. Responses will be aggregated for analysis, and any reporting on questionnaire findings will not include individualized information.

If you have questions or want to learn more, please visit the EJNYC website or email us at EJNYC@climate.nyc.gov.

In this section, you will be asked to identify the EJ issues in your community that are of greatest concern to you and describe your experience with the EJ issues you've selected.

You may skip any question you do not wish to answer.
